The Student Association (SA) is getting a full refresh.
As of May 1, the SA board was made up of newly elected members.
One of them is Ajani Miller, who will take on the role of director of operations. A full-time student in the Business Finance program and has been actively involved in student life since he arrived in Canada.
Miller moved from Jamaica just over a year and a half ago and said getting involved in campus events helped him feel at home at George Brown College (GBC).Before coming to Canada, Miller started a finance club in his high school back in Jamaica. That experience gave him a strong start in leadership.
“I came here a year and seven months ago. I like to jump in and get involved wherever I am, that’s how I ended up on the events team,” he said. “We planned events, invited speakers, and worked hard to stay on track. It taught me how to organize things and work with people. I used those same skills in clubs here at GBC, like Noir, which is for African-Caribbean students.”
In his campaign, Miller talked a lot about making students feel proud of their school and included in campus life.
“I’ve always been the kind of person who notices when someone feels left out. At events, I walk around to see who’s not having fun or needs something. I just like making sure everyone feels welcome.”
While he wasn’t planning on running at first his friends encouraged him to give it a try.
“People told me I had the personality and leadership skills for it. When I looked at the roles, director of operations stood out. It seemed like the one that fit me best.”
Miller has big plans to help boost school spirit and get students more involved. One of his main ideas is to connect GBC with the Toronto Raptors.
“We could have fashion students design a custom Raptors jersey. We already have a great fashion program. A project like that would give our students real exposure—and maybe even help them land jobs or internships.”
He also wants to improve student spaces and services, like extending gym hours and reopening the St. James bar.
“Lots of students told me they want the gym to be open longer, and I agree. The bar is also a space where students can relax and hang out without leaving campus. It’s about creating places where people feel like they belong.”
To Miller, being a leader means listening, learning, and working together.
“Leadership is about believing in your ideas and bringing others along with you. It’s also about knowing how to talk to different kinds of people and making sure everyone feels heard and respected.”
With strong goals and a clear passion for student life, Miller is ready to get to work and make a difference on campus.
