Peter Corno’s tenure on the board of directors comes to a close.
After serving a two-year term, Peter Corno is set to step down.
Following the spring 2023 general election, Corno was elected to the position of director of student experience. He then ran in the following spring election, extending his time in the role as he garnered more than 64 per cent of the vote.
Now with the year nearly through and his time coming to an end, Corno’s leadership during this time on the board will not be forgotten so easily.
“Watching Peter’s leadership evolution since 2023 has been inspiring. His commitment to the student’s engagement and positive experience has modelled the way for what the role of DSE is all about,” said Rosalyn Miller, general manager of the SA.
She continues to show appreciation for Corno’s willingness and adaptability to support the student union sovereignty which she states is a “true testament of his character, work and ethical standards.”
Corno concludes a memorable tenure of dedication and commitment towards creating an inclusive environment to explore shared interests and diverse cultures for students from various backgrounds.
Corno said he lived by the quote, “Don’t look at the world for what it is but dare to see it for what it could be,” while taking on his responsibilities and carrying out his duties.
During his time, he worked with the SA to bring much fun and engagement to the students. One such milestone was the revival of the overnight trips last organized about eight years ago – long before the pandemic.
The trip this time around is a two days, one night trip to Niagara Falls with visits to Clifton Hill, Fallsview Indoor Waterpark and a wine tasting at a local winery. This is what Corno considers one of his most proud and exciting achievements and shares his gratitude to all those involved, especially Neil Cumberbatch, senior coordinator, events.
Other notable achievements since Corno joined the board members include the rollout of the campus clinic pods (Cleavland clinics).
“These are the big things,” notes Corno. “What I personally like the most is the community got stronger over the past two years.”
Corno looks back to the challenges he faced along the way, all of which he takes as life lessons going forward.
“The biggest challenge was trying to communicate with everybody, trying to get everyone to work for the same team.”
He encourages anyone who is going to be joining the SA team after the elections to have a lot of ‘hope and integrity’ and to be a good person overall.
“You got to be the person you’re proud of.”
Looking forward, Corno has set his mind on being the best in whatever it is that he does.
He wishes to carry on the spirit of the SA out into the world to make people smile and laugh while having fun. He hopes that the SA will continue to build a bigger and better community and wishes his best to the incoming board of directors.
“This job, it’s a fun job. But I can’t say I would have had such an amazing year if they (SA staff) weren’t involved with this job as well.”
