A performance before the end

Dance students showcased their talent before ending their educational careers.

Just months before they take the next steps and walk across the convocation stage, George Brown College (GBC) dancers put on a show they hope no one will forget.

Student led performance ‘Emergence,’ took place April. 25, putting the creativity of this year’s graduating class, on full display.

What was special about this performance is that production, choreography, performance, and organization, was all student led. Their first foray into the industry.

“Realistically the Toronto dance scene is massive, so the show was more-so an entry into the scene where we applied a lot of the skills GB Dance taught us over our time as students,” said Jackson Young, who took part in the show.

“I think personally that it will be a great point to mention when we audition or submit resumes/biographies for future projects”, he said.

The idea for Emergence came from composition class teacher, Hanna Kiel.

“The Dance Performance program used to put on a show for its second years to showcase their composition pieces, entirely run by and managed by the students. After this was discussed, as a class we decided it would be a fantastic experience to go through and we all volunteered for positions and got to work setting up the show and how it would run,” said Young.

Students not only performed on stage, but they also had a hand in creating and choreographing the work of their peers. Young notes that he worked with dancers individual styles as each is unique in their process.

“Our composition teacher was adamant that there isn’t really a right way to create a piece of choreography, instead there are things you should try to avoid” said Young. “I relied on my dancers to know their bodies and particular styles so I could mold them into steps and a full creation, but the process is unique to pretty much all of us.

With the academic year officially over, GBC dance will soon welcome another new crop of students who will work to bring this type of show back again next year.
