A fashionable metamorphosis

Students at George Brown College are preparing to show off their hard work at this year’s Threads fashion show.

The event takes place April. 29, with a dress rehearsal at 2 p.m. and show at 6 p.m. The event will take place in the gym at Casa Loma’s C Building.

This year’s theme is Metamorphosis, which means change and transformation.

Threads gives students a chance to solve real problems and show what they’ve learned,” said Professor Sarah Hood, who teaches the fashion show course with Professor Tanya Brockley. “They use their creativity and skills to organize the whole show. When it’s done, they feel proud and more confident.”

This year’s fashion show will have about 150 outfits made by 40 student designers. The clothes come from students in different fashion programs, and students from the Makeup and Esthetics School help with hair and makeup.

Volunteers from all over the college also join in to help.

Haadiyah Bibi, a student who is the assistant director of the show, says the experience has helped her grow.

“I’m doing everything from planning meetings to decorating and helping backstage. I’ve learned so much from working with Sarah and Tanya,” she said.

The theme Metamorphosis was chosen by the students. “It shows how we’re changing,” Bibi explained. “We’re graduating and moving from school to professional life—like a caterpillar turning into a butterfly.”

Planning such a big event isn’t easy. “It took us weeks just to pick the name. Some people wanted Metamorphosis, others wanted Serendipity. We had to work together to decide,” Bibi added.

Each year, the show depends on more than 100 volunteers. “There are students modeling, helping backstage, welcoming guests—it takes a big team,” said Hood.

The decorations and visuals will also reflect the butterfly theme. “We’re using fishing lines to make butterflies look like they’re flying,” said Bibi. “I want the audience to feel like they’re watching real butterflies on stage.”

Professor Hood hopes students take away more than just a finished event. “This kind of project helps students become leaders, solve problems, and work well with others,” she said. “It gives them the confidence to succeed in the fashion industry after college.”
