Dancing to wellness

Discover how dancing can enhance health, creativity, and social connections.

More than an art form, it is a way to stay fit, meet new people, and explore creativity. For students, it offers a refreshing break from academic stress.

Toronto, with its vibrant dance scene, is the perfect place to start, and you don’t need to be a professional dancer to enjoy the benefits.

“For non-dancers, I think it can be a really cool experience,” said Ziba Moghaddam, a recent dance graduate from George Brown College (GBC).

Toronto boasts numerous studios, each with its own unique vibe and specialty. Studio North is known for its hip-hop and street dance styles. City Dance Corps offers a wide range of classes, from ballet to salsa. Fifth Dance Studio focuses on contemporary dance forms.

“I feel the levels of classes are higher. Even when you come to the beginner class, you can see that maybe it’s the same level as intermediate classes in other studios,” Moghaddam noted of Studio North.

Dancing provides a full-body workout, improving cardiovascular health, strength, and flexibility. It’s also a great way to relieve stress. The rhythm and movement can help clear your mind, offering a mental break from studying.

“My general idea is dance is the connection between your physical self and your soul, because it’s both art and sport,” said Moghaddam. “It can help you in many ways to improve yourself as a human being, not just as an artist or a dancer.”

Moreover, dance classes are a fantastic way to meet new people. You’ll find a diverse group of students, each bringing their own energy and passion. The social aspect of dance can help build friendships and a sense of community, making your college experience more enriching.

For those hesitant to start, many studios offer trial classes or beginner-friendly sessions. This is a great way to dip your toes into the world of dance without any commitment. You might be surprised at how quickly you fall in love with it.

Dancing is an excellent way for students to enhance their physical health, mental well-being, and social life. Toronto’s dance studios provide a welcoming environment for dancers of all levels.

Whether you’re looking to de-stress, meet new people, or explore your creative side, dance offers something for everyone. So, why not step out of your comfort zone and into a dance class? You have nothing to lose and a world of benefits to gain.
