Fundraising for cleaner water

Get a little wet to give clean water.

Water Ambassadors Canada, a group dedicated to bringing clean water, sanitation, and hygiene to communities around the world, is set to bring back their annual fundraiser May. 2.

Known as the Wet Gala, the event will return for its second run, aiming to raise money which will help the group continue to help create safer water around the world.

Brian Johns, CEO with WAC, points to the importance of safe water in the everyday lives of humanity as a driving point for the organization – and the gala.

“The leading cause of death and disease in the world is actually not whatever you may think… It’s actually the lack of access to clean water. When you give access to clean water, you solve a pile of problems for people. I think that, for me, having been touched by it personally and seeing what it does for people around the world firsthand, it affects you,” said Johns. “So, while it is the leading cause of death and disease in the world it’s actually the easiest thing to fix because you just have to give clean water.”

He adds this can be done by doing something as simple as drilling a well near a community or fixing a broken well, so the people do not have to travel.

As the gala is a focal point of fundraising for the group, Johns says it was created from the need to have something outside the usual golf tournament and fundraising event.

Like last year, the 2024 Wet Gala will give attendees a chance to eat and socialize, while having a chance to take in a fashion show on the blue carpet.

Walking the blue carpet as you come in with the backdrop, and throughout the evening there will be food with that runway as well happening. There’s also going to be a live auction taking place with video covering our sponsors and the impact of the evening, said Johns.

The first ever Wet Gala brought in more than $160,000 for the group to put towards building access to safe water sources. The group hopes to raise more than that as the event returns.

All the donations will be directly invested in current projects in Guatemala, Honduras, Zambia, and Uganda. Donors will receive a tax receipt.

Tickets for the event will be $200.
