Staying on board

A few familiar faces are returning to the board of directors in the new year.

The Student Association’s (SA) general elections ran from March. 4 to 28, with students of George Brown College (GBC) voting to fill nine open positions.

Of the 24 candidates, four were incumbents vying to return in the new year. Three of them were successful in their attempts to return, including Peter Corno who will stay on as the director of student experience.

A Canadian-born domestic student with family ties to Italy, Corno has spent nearly two years at GBC, currently in the fourth semester of the Construction Management program.

Once again in a race with numerous candidates, Corno managed to bring in 64.5 per cent of the vote over his four competitors.
Corno believes a part of his success is due to his competitors’ hustle. However, he believes being an incumbent who did a lot of outreach during his time in office helped.

“Somebody told me, if you do your job right, and show your face again and again, there’s no reason you shouldn’t win the next year.”

However, he didn’t settle for this advantage and tried to have new plans for students.

“[One of] the two biggest plans that I want to implement is the Montreal trip. I’d love to take 300 to 500 students in Montreal for a few days in one of the intercession weeks coming up. And then the other plan would be to build that Instagram tabling.”

Although Corno believes he doesn’t have any significant challenge, the most difficult part of his job will be ‘Instagram tabling.’

Corno explains, “I don’t want the Instagram to act as a hub for a few different things. I want it to be, obviously, links with information [that you need], because you don’t have a board of directors Instagram page. That’s my job come in here to help [and] direct students … I want to build that Instagram page that everyone can just always have that 24/7 contact. [To find the answer of] where do you need to go and for what you need to contact.”

Stepping back into the role, Corno emphasizes his plan to collaborate with Board members and the fuller SAGBC team to fulfill his promises.

The role of the director of student experience is to promote and support recreational activities and events on campus.

Corno will continue in his role until April. 30. 2025.
