A treasure trove of information

The GBC Library Learning Commons is in constant evolution for students’ learning.

Many students use the library for browsing books or equipment, or to have a place for silent study sessions.

Sara Gillard, manager of digital and technical services at the Library Learning Commons (LLC) believes that the role of a library in the new world is to guide students to authoritative sources.

The LLC isn’t limited to just textbooks. The library has more than 150 subscriptions to databases which include academic journals, magazines, newspapers, and trade publications for students to use.

Most materials and subscriptions are meant to directly support the curriculum associated with current programs.

Gillard says, “People often have a misconception about libraries that they’re not relevant in today’s times, especially when so much information is available via a Google search. [But] the amount of information that people are bombarded with, so much of it is not credible.”

Students can also get help from the librarians to find materials related to their study or research.

“What libraries and librarians can do is provide the right information you need for your research. We offer expertise in finding the right resources to meet research needs amid an overwhelming amount of information,” Gillard said.

Additionally, all librarians and library technicians and staff in the front desk in all three campuses are ready to assist students. Students can also seek help from Ask ON, the online chat service of the LLC.

Furthermore, Gillard shared that if students are looking for a specific book or paper, they can fill out and submit the Recommend to Order form on the library website.

She notes that there is no guarantee the requests made by students will be purchased, however, they are evaluated by the liaison librarian for that program area.

Every GBC student can access this database using their GBC credentials on their personal device or using the computers in open access area of the library.

All three libraries offer the same services with similar layouts. They include an open-access computer area, quiet zone, study rooms, stock of books, front and help desk, and printers.

Students can also get their GBC student cards at the LLC, however, some equipment is specific to each campus.

“At Casa Loma, we have large plotting printers for architecture and mechanic students. We don’t have that at other campus locations,” explained Gillard.

The LLC has made some adjustments for the new school year, such as changes to the layout following the reopening of the 200 King (SJA) building.

“One of the main changes is introducing a new large group study area at St. James with brand new tables, chairs, and furniture,” said Gillard. “In response to student feedback, we moved the book stocks from the main floor to the lower floor to make the space more accessible.”

A new virtual reality lab has also recently been set up at the Casa Loma campus which officially opened earlier in October.

In addition to the resources provided by the LLC, students can visit any other college library in Ontario and use their GBC card.

Gillard added that students can also submit a request through the LLC website to obtain an item from another college in Ontario.

Students can access online resources such as videos on how to use the library services, research guides, and orientation material on their website www.georgebrown.ca/library-learning-commons.

Students are encouraged to make use of the library and its services during their time at GBC.

“There’s a wealth of information available through the library that you won’t find anywhere else,” says Gillard.
