Making Health a priority

Learn about your student health plans provided by the Student Association and how you can make the most of it

George Brown College students can avail themselves of student health coverage plans through the Student Association and its Health Benefits program.

Health Benefits not only provides health coverage plans but also offers support to students in navigating the process of benefit claims.

Students are offered three different plans with varying coverage lengths depending on their start dates.

The domestic plan is offered to full-time students in the ESL program or post-secondary program, the international plan is offered to international students in a post-secondary program, and an international plan in ESL program is offered to international students in the ESL program.

The prices for these plans vary according to coverage period and type of plan.

Yukiko Ito, senior coordinator of Health Benefits, urges students to use their health benefits. The Health Benefits service tries to ensure that students are aware of their rights with the health coverage they pay for.

“We go to the orientation, answer general inquiries, and explain how to access more information on health coverage and plans,” said Ito, “If the student has paid for the health benefit, I want to make them utilize it for the benefits. It is very important for students to stay safe and healthy because there is a lot of pressure and stress on them, added on by the transition from being virtual to coming back in person.”

Health Benefits also offers short-term counseling services through WeConnect for students’ mental wellbeing. Students who have the domestic plan or the international student in post-secondary program plan can access these services through wespeakstudent.com.

Students covered under any of the plans can also add their dependents to their student plan by applying before the deadline specified on www.wespeakstudent.com

Alternatively, those wishing to opt-out may also do so through the website by Oct. 5, 2023. However, International students enrolled in the Fall 2023 term are not eligible to opt out of the health coverage plan.

Students with enquiries can email the service at healthbenefits@sagbc.ca or visit any of their offices. Health Benefits is located on all three major campuses.

Ito also personally visits the Toronto Metropolitan University campus once a week to answer questions from students.
