Find your dream job

An event specific to international students at GBC and their hunt for a Canadian career.

StartGBC along with Orbit 5 is bringing international students at GBC an event to help them find their dream job.

FutureMakers 2023: Student networking summit, is designed to help international students build good resumes, elevate their networking skills, and establish connections with people from various organizations. Registered students will be able to join in-person or online via zoom.

It will take place May. 6.

The event is the first of its kind by Orbit5, a career-coaching company founded by David Mendoza, professor at GBC and Urvish Patel, GBC alumni and former director of communications and internal at SAGBC.

Nik-Keisha Moodie, events, workshop facilitator & digital communications coordinator at StartGBC said, “StartGBC is especially keen to support start-ups who are trying to advance members of our community to achieve their personal goals and develop knowledge transfer.”

The event will feature keynote speakers, panel discussions, and interactive sessions led by top recruiters and industry leaders. Students will also be able to take part in exclusive workshops on job search and interview strategies among other things.

“We are organizing this event to resolve the issues of bad resumes, LinkedIn, networking… the sole purpose is to help people do an effective job search,” said Patel, who is now the managing partner and CTO at Orbit 5 and a professor at Centennial College.

Patel shared that participants will also be able to visit a resume clinic where the team at Orbit 5, including himself, would review their resumes.

The organizers are expecting between 3,000 to 4,000 students at the event, given that students will be able to attend virtually in addition to the in-person venue.

“We will have people from IBM, Microsoft, RBC, Scotiabank, CIBC, TD Bank, in addition to the other 50 to 60 people who are in hiring and leadership positions in various companies,” Patel added.

He says participants can expect to network, develop personalized connections with these individuals and strengthen their job-search strategies.

This is the first collaboration StartGBC and Orbit 5 but has worked with other start-ups previously.

“We support student and alumni start-ups to build entrepreneur skills and help provide resources for them to test their products and services in the marketplace. StartGBC has been supporting Orbit5 since its incorporation as the co-founders are GBC alumni and is always keen to provide support to GBC-connected start-ups and this event is a good example of the collaborations we create to support our community,” said Moodie.

The event will be held at GBC’s 290 Adelaide St. E building from 10 am to 5 pm. Interested students can register here.
