Chasing the dream

Canadian director releases biggest film to date in Simulant.

April Mullen started a production company with her friend, Tim Doiron, 15 years ago.

Today, the team have released the film Simulant starring Simu Liu, Sam Worthington, Robbie Amell, and Jordana Brewster.

Shot in Hamilton, Ontario and released in theatres April 6, Simulant is a sci-fi thriller about a future where human androids replace people after they are dead, by keeping their personalities.

The movie shows one such human android’s attempt to win a widow’s heart, while dealing with other obstacles in its way.

“I hope audiences at the end of the day are left with a very thought-provoking conversation… Because all four characters in the film present a very unique perspective and I believe they all have very pure intentions. And if it boils down to it, I believe all of their intentions is love,” Mullen said.

The two Canadian filmmakers started their journey as students and encourage film students to follow their passion.

Mullen shared that finding like-minded people was the most important on her journey to where she is today. She added that experience was equally important.

“You have to get on set, find a way in your local community to be on set, volunteer as much as you can so that you can get a lot of experience in different facets in the film industry and just sort of decide what position you love.”

Mullen stressed that it is important for young people and young filmmakers to support Canadian film and keep it alive.

“It is really hard to stand out and get a Canadian film scene,” she said. “And this one [Simulant] has an original voice and so we’re hoping to reach out to students and look for your help to spread the word about the movie.”

Mullen shared that she is excited to see the films that future generations of Canadian filmmakers will create.

“I think the film industry can be seen as a big, scary, and out of touch dream. I remember when I graduated, it felt far removed, but if you stay focused and you stay committed and determined… and it takes a lot of perseverance, I’m not saying it’s easy, because you have to stay motivated every day and sometimes it takes years, but dreams come true. You can create a movie of your own.”
