Unlocking the Secrets of the World’s Largest Inland Sea is an event brought by the Wildlands League to promote awareness about the areas needing protection and conservation, two of which are James Bay and Southern Hudson Bay.

Taking place Sept. 22 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Miles Nadal JCC, people can immerse themselves in everything these beautiful bay areas have to offer.

The driving force behind this event was nothing less than conservation, says Anna Baggio, conservation director of Wildlands League.

“Three years ago, when we knew that there was an opportunity to safeguard the marine area, led by the Indigenous peoples and the coastal areas, we knew that this was the moment that we could work and support the Indigenous nations to safeguard the sea as they want to see it and bring our expertise to help make that happen. And that’s why we jumped on it,” said Baggio.

The event will include Indigenous speakers such as Alison Linklater, and musicians Lawrence Martin and Vern Cheechoo. You can also find immersive imagery and footage of the James and Hudson Bay presented by the Water Brothers.

A unique feature of this event is its ability to reach out to people living in the area says Megan Chen, conservation manager with Wildlands League.

“There are local experts that have been living in the area with their families since time immemorial and have a deep knowledge of the land. They have the most incredible stories and personal connections to this land, and you can experience firsthand from them what it’s like to live there.”

Money generated from this event will also be utilized in conservation efforts.

“It’ll help us offset some of the expenses of the event, but we’re hoping that with some of the proceeds will be able to invest it back into our conservation programs, the programs that we’re doing to deliver conservation, in partnership with indigenous peoples,” says Baggio.

Shannon Pole, the event coordinator for Unlocking the Secrets also shared her opinion on the event.

“I’d say the event really stands out because there’s so much passion behind a cause. So, it really isn’t just about showcasing the organization as an organization, but it’s about showcasing how they’re interacting with so many people, and how interwoven everyone and how we can we bring that story to other people,” she said.

Tickets are available starting from $15, with the option for donations.
