As the college re-opens after a long time away, varsity sports are returning with full force.
Students can expect competitive tryouts, intense matches, and a lot of excitement in the air for this season. It is a great time to explore your interests if you want to join varsity sports.
George Brown College (GBC) varsity sports include soccer, basketball, volleyball, badminton, and the newly introduced e-sports.
But being a Husky is no easy feat. It requires commitment, dedication, and passion.
Varsity student athletes represent GBC at one of the most prestigious levels including Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) and Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
Becoming a student athlete has some eligibility requirements. Make sure to check the eligibility requirements for each sport.
Students must be enrolled in full-time courses to be a Husky and have some experience playing the sports as well.
Student athletes must maintain a 1.70 GPA at minimum for diploma courses, or a 2.30 GPA for degree courses, each semester. Being a student athlete must be accompanied by academic success and students need to maintain passing grades in every subject to avoid any sanctions.
To make sure that student athletes maintain their grades, the Athletic Academic Support Program helps athletes achieve their goals by reviewing their academic progress and providing regular feedback.
Keeping in mind the eligibility criteria, to improve your chances of being selected, students can fill out the ‘Prospective Athlete Form,’ on the official varsity sports website and if the student holds a strong profile, they can expect a reply from one of the coordinators.
If you meet the eligibility criteria, the first thing that you should keep in mind are the tryout dates.
The start of each semester marks the time for tryouts and students must register in advance to appear for and take part in tryouts.
Students can register by filling out the ‘Varsity Tryout Registration Form,’ available on the website.
To find information on the tryout dates for each sport, visit the official Varsity Sports Website as it is the place for all the information you will need.
