GBC’s Sustainability Squad calling for new members, leadership

The George Brown College Sustainability Squad is currently seeking Executive and General Members for their 2021 team with applications due this Saturday, September 18. The positions available are ideal for those searching to participate in a community of like-minded peers who value the well-being of the campus, community and the environment at large.

Voted the Best Student Club/Network by the Student Association of George Brown College (SAGBC), the Sustainability Squad defines itself as a student-led organization aimed at fostering sustainability within the student experience and beyond. According to Club President Georgy Pyle, the organization “provides a sense of community and an opportunity to connect with a network of students who share a desire to make positive change in so many areas of life”.

Achieving environmental literacy and adhering to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals are at the forefront of their initiatives, all of which have led them to many credible achievements.

In previous years, the Squad has organized many events including campus clean-ups, the Christmas Eve meal service, environmental film festivals, and The Birdhouse Project. This year, their priority is to reach as many students as possible with engaging events relating to social and environmental justice.

The club offers a wide variety of positions for those who identify with their goals. As an Executive Member, successful applicants will have the opportunity to take an active role in the strategic planning and organization of various ongoing projects while participating in monthly meetings with teammates. Pyle notes that one of the many perks as an Executive Member is “putting your own voice into the initiatives.”

The roles available on the Executive team are: Director(s) of Finance and Operations, Events Coordinator(s), Community Outreach and Communication Liaison(s), Graphic Designer(s) and Social Media Coordinator(s). The Squad is also searching for a first-year student eager to take on a leadership role as Co-President. For a detailed list of roles and responsibilities, check out their Virtual Information Session here.

As a General Member, successful applicants will take on a more casual role, helping out with projects and collaborating within the executive team as a way of participating in the community periodically throughout the year.

To apply as an Executive Member, send a 500-word paragraph including your name, e-mail, GBC student number, current program, personal interest in sustainability along with any strengths, passions, or goals that you would like to share.

Interested students are encouraged to sign up for the Sustainability Squad’s mailing list to stay updated on news and events relating to the club. To learn more, visit the Sustainability Squad online or email them at gbcsustainibilitysquad@gmail.com
