No resolution yet as GBC continues to investigate suspected malware infection

Online and in-person classes continue to run as scheduled as George Brown College (GBC) continues to investigate a suspected malware infection that occurred and has remained unresolved since the evening of June 13.

“We are working to get our IT systems running and appreciate your patience,” said in a news release on June 17.

The system-wide shutdown has blocked communications on GBC’s email system, meaning that employees, students, and faculty are unable to access their inboxes until the issue is resolved. Though minimal information has been provided on when systems will be back up and running, it is recommended that students continue to stay in contact with their professors through Blackboard and Microsoft Teams, which remain as the only operating IT systems at this time.

This event serves as a significant barrier to students and faculty members as they struggle to navigate through this week’s exams and other scheduled learning activities. Students have taken to Twitter with an array of different concerns, ranging from tuition fee payment dates to their exams not being posted at the scheduled time.

Though minimal information has been provided as to when systems will be back up and running, GBC says there has been no indication of a data breach at this time.

The domestic admissions team continues to process applications daily, reminding applicants that admissions advisors do not have access to their emails at this time. For this reason, applicants have been advised to reach out through the Contact Centre at 416-415-2000.
