COVID-19 outbreak at the George as four students test positive in a week

By Victoria Surla

Four students in the George residence at George Brown College (GBC) have recently tested positive for COVID-19.

The first case was confirmed on Sunday, November 15, and communicated with the college community on Monday, November 16. GBC has been working closely with Toronto public health ever since to combat the further spread of the virus, says Chris McGrath, GBC’s vice-president of Student Success.

“First and foremost, we continue to reinforce the importance of individuals taking necessary personal precautions, following public health guidelines, self-quarantining if they are not feeling well, and getting tested,” says McGrath.

It is not known to GBC how the first case occurred, says McGrath. Currently, all four students are in isolation in their individual suites, receiving on-site support including the delivery of essential supplies and food. The Student Association of George Brown College’s SNAP program has also been providing support.

“This is not much different than an individual living alone in a private apartment,” said McGrath.

“We cannot remove students from the building, as the residence is their home. The safest place for them to be is in their room, under the supervision of Toronto Public Health and the college.”

Access to the George is currently restricted to residents and employees, and all residents are now advised to get tested for COVID-19. Residents have been restricted from accessing other college buildings until the situation is “under control”, says McGrath, and that students with on-campus academic requirements (estimated at 10 students) will be accommodated and not be penalized.

Additional measures such as review of health safety training for employees and increased disinfection of all common areas and high touch points have also been employed.
