GBC announces positive COVID-19 test on St. James campus

A member of the George Brown College (GBC) community who recently visited the St. James campus tested positive for COVID-19, according to an email sent to students from Chris McGrath, the college’s VP of student success, on the evening of September 29.

The individual, whose name was not disclosed, was on campus between 8 am and 1 pm on September 25. McGrath says the individual is self-isolating and the college is working with Toronto Public Health to assist them with contact tracing.

“I know that this information can be scary, but we continue to work hard to ensure that all members of the GBC community remain safe,” McGrath said in the email.

It is the first known positive COVID-19 case on GBC’s campus since the beginning of the school year.

“Although it is not surprising to have a confirmed case in a community as large as ours, we know this news is concerning,” said McGrath. “Given the recent increase in cases in Toronto, we have been prepared for a scenario like this, and the many precautions we have implemented to reduce the spread of COVID-19 remain in place.”

Members of the GBC community who have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 or are currently experiencing COVID-19 symptoms are asked to self-isolate and contact Toronto Public Health.
