Yael Elfanbaum is one of the newest instructors to join the George Brown College Video Design and Production Program. She is teaching students Virtual Reality Technology with Samsung 360 VR Video Film Equipment. She is one of the newest innovators spearheading this new concept of film making in Toronto. She is part of a movement of content creators that are creating videos that are interested in evoking empathy from the viewer. This is a new concept drawing on dreamlike experiences and sense memory to provide a different way to look at how you view and create a movie. It is no longer a 2D plain like how we are currently watching movies but a 3D plain with videos providing a 360 look where it is no longer in front of you but in addition behind, above and below. Her first encounter with this technology was as the first editor for Inception VR content distribution company. “I was so fascinated in this medium to create stories. Creating my fictional series Spotlight Effect … was pretty amazing because [it was] creating something new and seeing how it becomes alive was really interesting and how to tell stories in this new medium for yourself. I think was the highlight for me“

She talked about the opportunities that have developed for women in this field. “I think that the VR field especially gives a lot of opportunities for women because it is a very new industry and everyone with the knowledge and talent can find her way in. It still feels like a man’s world as in many other tech and entertainment fields, but I met a lot of women VR creators in the world.”

She discussed the hopes for GBC students“ I hope we can learn together. Because there is so much to explore and the language is not there yet so there is not a lot of entertainment storytelling content in [this field] today and we have the opportunity to explore for ourselves and build it for yourself. And i just keep learning from my students and this class and I hope that the incite from my experience will encourage the students to bring their own idea and their own vision to this medium” She told us about the class environment at George Brown College “In class we are going to talk about the Consciousness mode and see how we can build a language of dreams, memories, It deals with consciousness and metaphors.” This is a new experience for the students at GBC and Yael is heading new innovative technology concepts at GBC.
