The Dialog‘s news editor Preeteesh Peetabh Singh and art director/illustrator Samantha Bullis have been shortlisted for a total of four prestigious John. H. McDonald (JHM) awards for excellence in student journalism.
According to the website for the national conference of Canadian University Press (CUP), the JHM awards were envisioned to be similar in character to the National Newspaper Awards started by the Toronto Press Club in 1949.
The awards, also known as “the Johnnies”, are open to anyone whose work has been published in a student publication. The winners of the awards will be announced at the JHM Award gala at the Art Gallery of Alberta in Edmonton on Jan. 11.
Singh, a student in George Brown College’s (GBC) marketing management-financial services program, was shortlisted in the sports writing category for his article “From cricket to baseball in four months” while Bullis, a GBC graphic design student, made the final cut in three visual categories: comics for “An Illustrated Guide to Combating Bike Theft”; layout design for “War & Conflict: A Torontonian Perspective”; and best front page for “The Student Saver.”
There was a total of 570 entries for this year’s JHM awards in 21 categories. The full shortlist of JHM awards can be viewed on the CUP conference website.
