George Brown College (GBC) men’s volleyball team won a silver medal in the Adidas Cup Thanksgiving Classic tournament held at Durham College.

On the way to the gold medal match-up against Humber, the Huskies swept Trent University 2-1; beat Quebec City-area school Cégep Limoilou 25-20, 25-22; and lost to Loyalist College of Belleville 25-21, 25-19.

The game against national bronze medalists Niagara College of Welland was crucial for the Huskies as it was their VIP pass to the medal round.  After losing the first set 25-22, the Huskies came back to win the next two 25-17, 15-13, with help from John Luu’s nine kills.

The Huskies took on Humber in the championship final but lost 3-2. The balance shifted from side to side as a pendulum clock that made the competition pretty intense and a loss not so humiliating.

GBC rookie D’Artaniel Jackman with eight kills, John Luu with seven and Stephan Duong with eight kills, three digs and two blocks stood out in the finals. Edwin Sheon and Luu made it to the championship all-stars from GBC.

Women and men’s volleyball team fall short against Mohawk Mountaineers in exhibition games

The results of the volleyball exhibition games showed that the Huskies still have things to work on. The same day loss of women’s and men’s team to the same opponent left unpleasant aftertaste.

The Women’s volleyball team won a battle but lost the war, losing to the Mohawk Mountaineers, 3-1. It was a second time they faced Mohawk College and fell short on both occasions. The men’s team were also found in a similar situation losing 3-1 to the same opponent.

Men’s Volleyball head coach Josh Nichol couldn’t hide his disappointment “We need to do a better job serving aggressively and also identifying the other’s team hitters in transition.”

Basketball losses hints of mysterious interconnection

A mysterious interconnection between the men’s and women’s Huskies teams can be also observed in the basketball game results: both fell short at the same week of the pre-season.

Mohawk College beat the men’s team 84-63, dominating at the opening quarter, 21-14 and at halftime, 41-25. George Brown tried to push hard on the third quarter but the forces were not equal. Mohawk took the game, scoring 30 points to GBC’s 10 points to end the game.

Former two-time OCAA all-star Vadim Halimov, Ricardo Brown and Dejazmatch James from GBC were leading their team with 16, 15 and 11 points respectively.

The men’s basketball season opener is against Algonquin College on Oct. 26 in Ottawa while the home opener is on Nov. 1 at Georgian College of Barrie.

The women’s team lost to Humber College, 58-48 in an exhibition game. They play next at the Georgian Invitational in Barrie Oct. 18-19.

Extramural cricket try-out begins at Casa Loma

The Huskies extramural cricket probables have started trying out for the upcoming tournament starting from Nov. 22 at Centennial College.

“We have only three returning players,” said Intramural Co-ordinator Albert DaSilva. “The team has potential to do well: some good players are trying out. Just like all new teams, with time the players will get familiar with the indoor rules. Strategy will begin once the team is selected, to improve the players’ skills and team unity.”

Out of 25 students who showed up at the first try-out at Casa Loma gym, about nine players will be selected to play in the tournament.

Training will continue leading up to the tournament date with practice sessions held every week on Wed, and Thu, 5-7 p.m. at Casa Loma Gym.
