Wrapping up a summer of campus games

Get ready for ladder ball with John Valle; Sean Heeger

Students and staff are invited to compete in a ladder ball tournament at Casa Loma.

Before the new academic year kicks off, John Valle, with the George Brown shipping and receiving department, is hosting the August sporting event at the greenspace on Dartnell Avenue.

Things are set to kick off 5 p.m. on Aug. 27.

For those wondering how to play ladder ball, it’s a simple to understand, but hard to master game.

Players will throw a bola – here they’re golf balls attached at each end of a string – at a three-rung ladder. Players take turns tossing their bolas, trying to wrap them around the rungs.

The bottom rung is worth one point, the middle rung is worth two and the top rung is worth three.

The first team to reach 21 points wins.

Valle mentions that the game was chosen to end the summer semester, because it’s easy and fun.

“It’s something simple, and it’s in the park. It’s outdoors [and] gives everybody a chance to enjoy the day. Hopefully, and it’s fun. Like people like to compete a little bit, and there’s a prize on the line, so they get a little bit more involved. You know what I mean. So I think it’s something, and it’s not too strenuous. It’s not like volleyball or soccer where it gets a little bit too much,” said Valle.

He mentioned he wanted the final summer event to be something that was fun without being as physically demanding as some of the other sports held before, like volleyball and soccer, which also sometimes get a bit more competitive.

What’s great about this game as well is that all the equipment was made personally by Valle.

In fact, many of the events he puts on throughout the year are put together entirely by him, including animations and activations for many of the other annual games.

The tournament is open to both students and staff, with teams made up of two players. Whether you have played ladder ball before or are trying it for the first time, Valle said the game is designed to be easy for anyone to pick up and enjoy and there are prizes you can win.

While the ladder ball marks the final summer event, Valle said he is already planning activities for the fall semester.

Depending on the weather and availability of spaces, he hopes to bring back more indoor games.
