Italian film directed by Francesco Sossai begins Canadian rollout through Ritual Films.
Italian film The Last One for the Road, opened May 8 in select Canadian theatres.
This was made possible through distributor Ritual Films.
The film directed by Francesco Sossai, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2025, during the Un Certain Regard section. It later screened at the Toronto International Film Festival.
A film of reflection that examines friendship and unfinished business, Ritual Films describes the film as “two washed-up petty criminals in Veneto spend their days drinking and reminiscing, until a chance encounter with Giulio, a drifting architecture student, launches them on a bittersweet road trip through the Venetian plains.”
The trio spend their days drinking and revisiting memories from the past. The film unfolds through simple talks and everyday moments rather than a traditional plot, with humor and nostalgia throughout.
Filippo Scotti, known for The Hand of God by Paolo Sorrentino, plays one of the leads. Pierre Paolo Capovia, a musician from Northern Italy and Germany, makes his first major acting appearance. Sergio Romano, known mainly for television work, also stars.
The film started its Canadian screenings at Fifth Avenue Cinemas in Vancouver and at Cineplex locations. More venues may be added. Tickets are available online through the Cineplex website and the Ritual Films website, where showtimes are listed.
The film has drawn attention in Italy, where it received 17 nominations at the David di Donatello Awards, often called the Italian Oscars.
What drew Ritual Films to release in Canada was the overall esthetics of the feature.
“And one thing that will draw me the most about this film is the esthetic. When you see the trailer, you see a materiality, like you’re closer to the subject, the man’s face, are very imperfect. There’s like, this punk vintage looks that’s very fun in a world that everything’s so polished and perfect, it’s refreshing. “said Olivia Courchesne the co-president and the creative director with Ritual Films.
Those looking to see something a little different in theatres can now see the award winning The Last One for the Road.
