Turn your house into your own minigolf course.
Scratch that minigolf itch without ever leaving your house again.
House of Golf – both the original and sequel – are arcade minigolf games that bring all the fun of golfing, right to your flat screen consoles. Originally released in 2019 – with the sequel landing on PlayStation and Xbox consoles in 2024 – the games offer up hundreds of levels across multiple settings.
Expanding the series further, developer Starlight Games – formerly Atomicom – has brought an even more immersive golf experience to your home via virtual reality (VR). The game also offers the first mixed reality (MR) experience that allows you to build your own courses.
“House of Golf VR was always about creating something that was gorgeous to look at, developed in Unreal Engine but offer something different to what we already enjoy playing on Meta Quest 2/3 and 3S,” said a developer with Starlight Games
The VR game – released Oct. 30, 2025 – offers up to 45 courses across multiple settings, which the developer notes are mixed into the various championships that can be played.
“With House of Golf VR being a physics-based game, every course gives the player the freedom to try all manner of shots and attempt clever trick shots and finding shortcuts. We don’t know where all the hole-in-one’s are in the game, but we’ve already seen some spectacular shots during our testing phase. The flexibility in the gameplay allows players to find things we didn’t even know about or intend to design into the courses.”
While the full-VR mode offers up a slew of different courses on which you can play, the MR mode is where the game truly shines. By working with your scanned spaces, players can create their own minigolf holes around any space in their home.
. “We wanted to take things to another level as well by incorporating and building the first ever mixed reality mini golf experience. This is amazing as the game allows you to experiment with objects, hazards and household items and place them anywhere in any room, even outside and create the mini golf course of your dreams.” said the developer.
Gameplay is easy – though you may find your golf skills are lacking – as you swing your way across all available modes.
Played with just one controller for a more natural feel, House of Golf VR offers only teleportation as a movement option – which may upset those who are used to the freedom of movement offered in similar VR minigolf games. If you’re playing in MR you can move by physically walking around your space.
Whether you’re jumping into a full VR course or creating your own, the mechanics here are simple and built with players of all experience levels in mind. To get your ball to appear, simply hold your hand palm up and the ball you have chosen shall pop up; place the ball by then flipping your hand back over and pulling the triggers when it’s in the spot you want.
From here you can take practice swings before holding the grip buttons to make your shot.
It should also be noted that you’ll need to earn a trophy in the tutorial tournament before you can play the bulk of the game.
Now let’s talk about the MR mode, because this is the part of the game that will keep gamers coming back. The MR mode is where the game really shines, as the courses you make are only limited by your own creativity. Make a simple hole that allows for an easy hole-in-one, or ones with elaborate items and hazards which make your putts more fun to experience.
“These hazards can be interactive and therefore you control how they react in the real world. You can set up a chain effect for example where you place a hot air balloon into your living room, kitchen or garage and then set its path. That path may result in the ball dropping into an area you have set up a cannon, that cannon spits out the ball onto a bounce pad, the ball bounces off that and then lands by a crane, which the crane then picks up the ball and places it close to the hole. It’s very interactive and above all, fun.”
There are infinite possibilities for the holes you can create, and if your space scans are done properly, you can even include your furniture for some more creative offerings.
Creating these levels takes time and patience, and thanks to some glitches with the interface it can at times feel like a slog.
Once you’ve finally unlocked the MR mode, the game will take you to another tutorial. One of the first things it’ll ask you to do is raise your wrist to see your “watch” and it’s here where the issues kick in. The watch menu seems to require some better alignment as you essentially need to raise your wrist much higher than necessary to get it to work. One might even accidentally smack themselves in the face while trying to get the watch to activate.
Once do you finally manage to get it working, you’ll have to flip through the menu options by scrolling through with the thumbsticks; this is another case where you may run into glitches, as more than once trying to move around the menu ended with the watch disappearing.
This meant starting over again.
When you are in the editing menu, you’ll notice a slew of options available to you for creating each hole. Set everything from the tee to objects in your space – add cute items around to freshen up an empty room, or place them strategically as obstacles in the way of your shot.
Courses can be saved and reworked at will, giving you the freedom to entertain yourself and family.
Overall, House of Golf VR is a first-of-its-kind golf experience that gives you the freedom to make your golf dreams come true. While there are some limitations – and glitches which need to be addressed – the MR mode gives those who may be looking for a different type of golf experience, something fresh and new.
House of Golf VR, was reviewed on the Quest 3 after receiving a key from the developer.
