Casting for a TV opportunity

Students renting a space during their studies can apply to participate in a design series.

If you think your space could use a redesign, a new television show is looking to help showcase the upgrades.

Student renters can now apply to participate in an upcoming series by Nikki Ray Media (The Love Club, Ultimate Food Showdown, Home to Win). Rentovation will take design teams into the homes of students, filming as the space receives a flip worth up to $10,000.

Julie Lee, associate producer with Nikki Ray Media, says they are looking for 13 students – preferably those who are sharing accommodations. She adds that the renovation will be limited only to decoration and doesn’t involve destroying any walls or any other room.

“I’m calling it creatively cosmetic. So, it’s just being creative within the space that we already have. Like [we’re not] taking down any walls. We’re not taking a sledgehammer to anyone’s kitchen like you see on those home random shows. This is figuring out how to make the best of the space,” said Lee.

The students won’t have to contribute financially and will get up to $10,000 worth in renovations towards the apartment. Lee notes the show will seek the approval of the landlords and the producers will be transparent about all the steps taken.

The show will contain 13 episodes, with each showcasing a different renovation at a different house.

All students are welcome to apply and casting will run until Aug. 18. With a limited number of episodes in the inaugural season, Lee encourages students interested in participating to apply early.

Lee notes that students selected will need to leave their place of residence for up to five days – returning only for times when the filming takes place.

“We’ll film with the renters on the Monday, the Wednesday and the Friday… the Monday we come in we meet the renters, we do a walk through that point, then we ask them to move out for a couple of days. That way, we can really get in there and like get all the work done. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, we do all our work Wednesday, we do film with the renters is like a process day, then Friday is the reveal. And then people move back in and everything in the space is theirs to keep and we say enjoy,” she said.

Those who are considering applying to participate should note that there will be no financial compensation for participating in the show. Instead, Lee believes the chance to be on TV – combined with a free redesign of their space – is what should entice people to join the series.

“I think it’s a plus for the landlord, because you are making the space better for the people that live in it. And then they’ll live there longer. Like you won’t have turnover for your renters for the future,” Lee added. “And just because you’re a renter doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice design or function in the space. Like you can still make the best of your space for the time that you’re living in.”

Filming is expected to start Aug. 19, 2024.
