George Brown College is set to play one final deciding game before OCAA championships
With a successful season wrapped up, George Brown College’s (GBC) basketball teams are hosting crossover over games on Saturday in the hopes of earning their way to the OCAA championships.
With the regular season wrapped up, GBC’s men’s team stands second in the East Division with a 17–3 record.
For the qualifying round for the OCAA championships, the Huskies will face off against Lambton College on Saturday in a do-or-die round.
“I’ve told them, now that the season is over, we can’t afford to lose anymore, from here on in, if you lose you’re out,” said head coach Peter Sambu.
All season, GBC has competed against schools on the Eastern side of the province. The crossover games give teams from each side of the province one game to make the playoffs.
As the second seed in the East Division, the Huskies have favourable odds in their game against Lambton, who is in fifth place in the West Division.
With all of the success the team has had so far, their expectations are high going into the game.
“Hopefully we all just stay together,” said forward Kingslee D’Silva. “We’ve had a lot of conflicts the whole year with so many things, personal and out of our control so I think the best thing for us is just to stay together through whatever happens and if we do that I think we will win a lot of games.”
As the stakes amp up, it’s important for the team to make sure they’re prepared both mentally and physically.
“We’ve just got to stay humble and continue working hard,” said Sambu. “There’s a lot of great teams here in this league and by no means are we out of the woodwork.”
The women’s basketball team is also in second place in the East Division. With a record of 14-3, they will be facing off against Niagara College on Saturday before the men’s game.
The women will start the day at 1 p.m. while the men will face off at 3 p.m. in the Casa Loma gym.
