Students and staff encouraged to join upcoming George Brown hosted events.
Head out onto the courts and play against fellow staff and students in two upcoming sporting events.
March 2026 will see two different tournaments hosted throughout the month, with the first taking place March. 4. Those who want to play badminton can jump into mixed-doubles action from 5 to 7 p.m.
If you’re looking for a little more action, March 25, dodgeball will be on deck – also from 5 to 7 p.m.
Both sports will be played in the Casa Loma gym.
The events are organized by John Valle, longtime staff member with the shipping and receiving department. He hosts a number of sporting and other fun events throughout the year, with a focus on community building and fun.
“It’s just more of a get out people play a little bit, you know, enjoy it and stuff like that.” Valle said.
Badminton will be played in doubles format, with four courts allowing up to 16 players to compete at one time.
Dodgeball will feature six players per team on the court, with substitutions allowed. Standard rules will apply, including no headshots and fair play guidelines to ensure safety and inclusiveness.
Games are expected to begin around 5 p.m. and last up to an hour and a half.
Valle emphasized that while some students may sign up with friends, teams may be adjusted to maintain balance, especially when experienced players are involved.
Depending on turnout, tournaments may follow a round-robin format so that everyone has the chance to play multiple games.
Players of all skill levels are encouraged to attend. Those who come out can expect a welcoming environment where fairness is prioritized and every skill level is valued.
Both events aim to provide students with a break from academics while building stronger connections across campus.
“They might also get to meet some of the faculty and some of the other support staff. It’s more of a social and networking thing,” Valle said.
While students and staff can drop by and register on the day of the event, Valle encourages students to register in advance so teams can be organized fairly.
“I prefer people register so I get a better idea,” Valle said, noting that previous events have seen between 15 and 20 participants.
To register online, participants can visit gbc4me.weebly.com and pick the sport they want to play. For those who register day of, they can drop by the gym starting at 4:30 p.m.
