Ontario indie band to make a stop in Toronto.
Ottawa indie band Noise Hotel’s new song Sweet Talk, released on May 29.
This new track came after what Brendan Vandepol, the band’s producer and drummer says was a 15-hour session.
Sweet Talk explores the frustrations of miscommunication in relationships, drawing from personal experiences and observations.
Noise Hotel is a quartet of professional artists with strong roots in Ottawa.
Composed of Eric Montpool (lead vocals/guitar), Christian Strong (bass), Vandepol, and Matthew Scharfe (guitar), their formation and even their name stemmed from a pure desire to make music and live in the moment.
“The name Noise Hotel happened to be a perfect vessel for that because I wanted people when they came to our shows or when they listened to our music to kind of get lost in it,” said Montpool.
The band’s sound isn’t confined to a specific voice but instead a melodic fusion of talent built on the desire for boundless self-expression. Drawing inspiration from bands such as The Strokes, Backseat Lovers, and Steely Dan, the group has combined strong, personal vocals to create their unique sound.
This approach led to 20,000 organic iTunes streams for their song Diet Cigarette in less than two years after their debut.
Originally started when Montpool met Strong while studying at Carleton University, they later connected with Scharfe in the local music scene. Vandepol, a high school friend of Montpool, joined the band more recently after a coworker’s recommendation.
The band sees the release of Sweet Talk as a new era for the musical quartet.
“That song’s got a really special place for me because it felt like, to me, one of the first tracks where we all got to kind of put our own thing on it when we got going,” said Scharfe.
Meanwhile, Montpool described the song’s theme as “feeling like you can never say the right thing… And whatever you say, you try and tackle the problem, but it just kind of ends up making everything worse, even though you’re both trying in earnest to get this problem solved.”
The band plans to cross as many borders as they can to share their music and are currently on tour in Ontario. They are also very optimistic about this year, as they hinted at the potential release of up to five singles and an EP later in the year.
Sweet Talk is now out on all platforms.
Noise Hotel are set to perform this new single alongside other hits at the NXNE Music Festival in Toronto on June 14.
