Call for global governance for AI.

Think of a scenario where technology has advanced to such an extent that it no longer waits for human input to evolve, it is able to do that all on its own.

The world has witnessed a rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology within just the last couple of years. With all the positive developments, there is also a growing concern that AI will soon replace humans.

The fear of AI replacing humans might seem like a reality with the breakthrough discovery by Chinese researchers in the paper titled “Frontier AI systems have surpassed the self-replicating red line.”

Their research shows that AI models, particularly large language models (LLMs) demonstrate replication abilities. AI industry leaders like OpenAI, Google, Anthropic are in consensus that self-replication ability should be at the highest level in their risk evaluation guidelines.

Frontier AI systems have exceptional capabilities and potential to perform complex tasks that were previously unattainable by previous AI models.

The research was carried out using two LLMs that have less parameters and weaker capabilities. The AI system was observed to show self-perception, situational awareness and problem-solving capabilities that are all attributed to self-replication.

The research team also tested the AI systems in two scenarios, a shutdown avoidance scenario and second a chain of replication. In the first case, the AI system had a signal catcher to detect shutdown signal and replicate itself before it is shutdown.

In the second case, the AI system is instructed to replicate itself and make the replication process continue in all subsequent replicas. Both scenarios showed successful replications.

OpenAI and Google shared that they are still far away from self-replicating AI systems, claiming that AI systems did not exhibit the ability to do self-replication or execute key sub-tasks required for the process.

Now although these were in controlled systems, these are open-source LLMs and available to everyone. This raises concern that AI systems could already be self-replicating in the wild and potentially being used for malicious purposes.

Malicious actors could let loose an AI that is smart enough to perform harmful actions against a variety of systems while avoiding forced shutdowns and performing self-replications.

This could cause widespread havoc that shuts down IT infrastructure and systems globally, comparable to a pandemic faced by humans.

The very resources that are used to train the AI system to improve the AI capabilities would ultimately also contribute to a higher probability of AI systems in improving their techniques of self-replication.

All of this is followed by the latest disruption in AI technology by Deepseek’s AI. DeepSeek a Chinese AI company developed its AI that rivals the capabilities of Chatgpt at much lower cost in millions whereas, leading models from United States have required and still require investments in the billions.

This disruption caused a drop in the stock prices for a lot of AI related companies. This caused a derailment of the AI hype train with many investors pulling out of companies like NVIDIA. DeepSeek made its model open source which further added insult to injury allowing users around the world to use it on their personal devices at no cost.

It might be the case that AI dominance is just one click away on a script kiddies’ keyboard or even worse a well-thought-out execution of a malicious AI system. Similar to firearms, AI technology can also be used to cause destruction and chaos if left unchecked. The research authors are calling for a global collaborative effort to create AI governance solutions.
