Some games aren’t for everyone.
While there are any number of popular games out there that won’t ever resonate with those outside the masses – saying it right now that Fortnite and other online multiplayer games like this are trash – this idea stands truer in the midst of the indie field.
Now before those who are obsessed with games like Marvel Rivals, Overwatch, and other trashy e-sports titles start whining, here’s your exit ramp – because those games are the worst and you have no taste; but mostly this probably isn’t for you.
Not all indie games are the same. Sure, it looks like the digital game stores of PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo are filled with some of the lamest looking titles out there, but those are only a fraction of the indie field.
Then you get to a game like KARMA: The Dark World, and it’s a breath of fresher air than you might be able to take after wading through the cesspool of games like Balatro. Now that’s not to say it’s the best game ever, but it’s definitely setting itself apart from the rest of the pedantic trash games.
In KARMA you are Daniel, an agent that has the ability to go into people’s minds. This game of exploration is meant to be emotional – and considering the overall story of a corporation basically doing whatever they want to influence people to get their way, it’s very on the nose.
As you dive into the mind of a criminal, you start to question yourself and your reality. As a loyal servant to the corporation that is essentially trying to push down the masses to exert full control, your world will crumble as the trauma and guilt of those whose minds you explore.
The trial of this game is an interesting taste of what’s to come, and while this will certainly appeal to some, there is a clear lack of action that may drive most away.
Developer Pollard Studio certainly decided to send a message with the creation of this game, and while it’s overall an interesting game, it’s nothing to write home about. In fact, it could barely be described as more entertaining that some of those trash games mentioned earlier.
But that’s how indie games are. Cuphead is an interesting game, it’s hard as hell and unless you’re dedicated, you’ll probably get annoyed and rage quite before never playing again. But it’s popular.
That’s the power of indie games.
If you’re into weird horror adjacent games, this is definitely for you, but maybe wait a bit because more than likely, this will be free on a platform in the near future.
KARMA: The Dark World, was reviewed on Steam after receiving a pre-release key.
