Unleashing creativity

Unleash your support for students of the George Brown College (GBC) dance programs.

Taking place April. 17 to 19, Unleashed 2024 will see students from three dance programs join in on the year end performance, showcasing their talents and artistic skills.

Students taking part in the performance are from the Dance Performance Preparation, Dance Performance, and Commercial Dance programs.

What is special about this year’s performance is the choreographers this year are all alumni of GBC. Returning to help with the performances includes Christopher Knowles, Irma Villafuerte, Kathy Le, Miah Lewis, Mari Budgev, and Emma Lum-Gerry.

A new piece by faculty member Cynthia Macedo will also be performed.

“Unleashed allows our students the occasion to work with and alongside some of the community’s best creators. This opportunity allows dancers to cultivate not only relationships but work ethic and creative possibilities,” said Derek Sangster, acting associate director. “The entirety of the experience, auditions, hours of creation with faculty and guest artists, the technical and staging aspects, and final performance, are all so valuable for our students.”

Knowles graduated the Dance performance program in 2012 and has since gone on to travel across Canada and the U.S. setting choreography and created multiple shows within Toronto, among other things.

This year, he comes back home as a choreographer, to showcase a piece called Sit. Be still and listen. Described as a dark piece, the dance is about a human being going through their emotions, which Knowles is excited for people to see.

“It’s about a human being who is going through the trajectories of emotions through their life, whether that be good or bad. So, it’s based around one human being and their emotions. And the dancers are the emotions being manipulated throughout the routine. So, it’s almost like they are the mirror of who the person is,” said Knowles. “I think that this is my definitely my biggest, best piece of work that I’m about to showcase. So, I can’t wait for people to see it and understand it and feel it the way they want to feel it.”

Tickets start at $20 for GBC students and alumni.
