GBC’s financial aid can help students with academic costs.
Navigating the academic landscape in Canada can be challenging, and George Brown College (GBC) is committed to ensuring that no student’s journey is hindered by financial constraints.
GBC provides a suite of financial aid services, from awards and scholarships to external loans and work-study programs. This comprehensive approach aims to address the varied financial situations students may encounter during their academic pursuits.
“Our financial aid services are designed to empower students, recognizing the diverse needs within our community,” said Hazel Nanton, Student Awards Coordinator.
Incoming students are encouraged to explore the various scholarships and awards available through StuView, an online platform that streamlines the application process. There is an Eligibility Criteria, often centered around full-time enrollment and Ontario residency, which exists to ensure that the financial aid reaches those who need it most.
The application process is made accessible through proactive communication. The financial aid department ensures that students receive timely reminders and can modify or view their applications within specified timeframes. “We believe in keeping students informed at every step, guiding them through the application process,” said Nanton.
GBC’s financial aid initiatives also provide programs such as OSAP, awards, and work-study opportunities. These programs cater to both domestic and international students, fostering inclusivity and accessibility. The work-study program serves as a valuable resource for students seeking employment within the college.
“Our aim is to create pathways for students, recognizing the diverse backgrounds they come from… beyond financial aid, we strive to create opportunities for students to gain work experience within the college,” Nanton added.
GBC has collaborations with external organizations like Windmill, IONIC, and Scholarship Canada which further augment the financial aid landscape, offering additional avenues of support.
GBC also offers emergency funding for crises such as medical emergencies and family deaths. Individual consultations with the financial aid office determine eligibility. The financial aid office plays a pivotal role in exploring diverse avenues to secure financial assistance for students. Individual counseling sessions and seminars on financial literacy contribute to empowering students to navigate their financial responsibilities effectively.
The financial aid department also clarified some of the common misconceptions that students have, that financial aid programs are supplementary.
“Our goal is to supplement and support, not replace, the financial resources that students and their families contribute.” Another misconception that students have is that their application guarantees them acceptance. “Applying for financial aid does not guarantee acceptance, as eligibility criteria and budget allocations play crucial roles in the selection process. Our focus is on transparency and ensuring that students have a realistic understanding of what financial aid can provide,” Nanton added.
