The government of Ontario released new budget for two scholarships.
The Ontario government announced $2.5 million in scholarships for students impacted by international tragedies.
The budget is for two scholarship programs – the Ontario-Ukraine Solidarity Scholarship and the Ontario Remembrance Scholarship.
A total of $1.9 million is being invested into the Ontario-Ukraine Solidarity Scholarship by the province. This funding will support a total of 188 scholarships of $10,000 each for post-secondary students who relocated to Canada on an emergency basis.
The Ontario Remembrance Scholarship, which was announced in 2020, honours the memory of 57 Canadians who died in the Ukrainian International airlines PS752 in 2020.
This scholarship will support 57 post-secondary students in Ontario based on academic merit and financial need.
Liz Tuomi, senior communications advisor, said in a media release, “The government is ensuring students and families seeking safety in Ontario from conflict have the services and supports they need to complete their studies while honouring victims of recent tragedies and ongoing global conflicts.”
The scholarships will be made available for students through post-secondary institutions.
“Both scholarships will be administered by publicly assisted colleges and universities through an application-based process for eligible students. Funding will be provided to postsecondary institutions who make awards available to students based on academic merit and financial need starting in Fall 2023,” said Tuomi.
At GBC, students must be enrolled in a full-time or part-time academic program, must demonstrate financial needs, and must demonstrate academic or community service merit to be eligible for the Ontario Ukraine Solidarity Scholarship.
Four students will be awarded the scholarship yearly. Students can apply through Stu-View once the scholarship is made available for 2023-2024 academic year.
Eligible students should contact the financial aid office for further information. Details on all external scholarships can be found on the Financial Aid webpage.
