SA and GBC collaborate to provide free financial workshop on World Mental Health Day.

The Student Association (SA) in collaboration with George Brown College will be observing the World Mental Health Day.

To educate students, the SA will be providing students with a free financial workshop.

The workshop will be facilitated by Amanda Martin, financial educator with the Credit Counselling Society. Martin is a certified educator in personal finance and has over 12 years of experience creating financial wellness webinars and programs.

The one-hour free workshop for students will focus on topics of student financial stress, budget, and expenses, saving while in school, managing and understanding credit, student loans, and understanding debt.

Yukiko Ito, senior coordinator for Health benefits said, “Financial burden or financial difficulty during the study period affects student mental health a lot. That is why we decided to have this [topic] for the workshop. We welcome everybody if they want to learn something about financial issues or if they might be suffering from financial difficulties right now.”

The SA has not coordinated any events on World Mental Health Day in recent years. However, it does provide students the option for the Student Assistance Program which gives students access to short term counselling for mental health.

This student assistance program is provided to students through the post-secondary international student health plan and the extended health or dental coverage plan for domestic students.

The financial workshop is the first of its kind.

“This is a big collaboration, this is the first time, and we hope we have this every year to make students aware of the importance of mental health. We need to take care of everything in order to succeed in studies,” said Ito.

Students who are interested to join the financial workshop can join in person at the St James Campus in room 150 from 1 p.m. on Oct. 10.

No prior registration is required, and the admission availability will be on first-come, first-served basis.

Students can also attend various other events, activities, games, and workshops at all three campuses on Oct. 10 to observe the World Mental Health Day.
