Michael Bright shares excitement for the band’s new album.
Toronto-based punk rock band, Dead Broke comes out with their new album on Sept. 22. Michael Bright, vocalist and guitarist of the band, says the album is one about and for Toronto’s nightlife.
Bright played in a band alongside his friend Liam Farrell during his teenage years. Once Farrell left for university, Bright had to find a new way to keep his musical dream alive.
“I didn’t want to lose my momentum in music, so I started up dead broke right away with Evan Saunders, our co-founding drummer and we started as a two piece,” he said.
Their long-time friend Zack Carlan joined shortly after, followed by Bright’s sister Rachel Bright in 2013.
In the past decade, the band has made strides with playing internationally and producing records.
However, Bright says the new record ‘When the night comes in’ will be their proudest moment.
“We worked with a great producer Alex Bonenfant who’s had a lot of success in his career. He’s really brought us to the next level, and we’re kind of where we wanted to be 10 years into the band, changing up the sound, changing up our skill set and ultimately, giving the fans and friends and people who’ve followed the band this long something new to sink their teeth into.”
Singles Not Yours to Take and Not There Yet from the new album were released July. 19 and Aug. 11 respectively. Bright said that people are responding well to the song and are excited about the new album.
“I’m looking at it as an album that is reflective of a time and place in my life and the band’s life. You know, living in Toronto, living through our 20s. We wanted to make a soundtrack for the night,” Bright said.
The album is designed to be a go-to for various nightlife scenarios, like getting ready to go out or being played at parties. At about 25 minutes long, the album is intentionally shorter than a typical record to respect people’s attention spans in their busy lives.
“We just wanted to make a record that you could listen to while you’re getting ready to go out, or getting to where you need to go, or putting it on at the party kind of thing,” said Bright.
The band aspires to continue touring internationally, playing larger festivals, and producing more music that listeners enjoy in the coming years.
Bright believes the band centers around reflecting on the challenges of daily life and that they seek through their music is to bring forward social, economic, and political issues, adhering to the punk rock tradition of being a social barometer.
They consider music as a form of release, nonetheless, they don’t want to lose sight of the harsh realities people face. They also explore themes of relationships and the human perspective gained from traveling and aim is to strike a chord with their listeners by sharing their lived experiences.
The record will be available in vinyl through their website and in digital formats on all major digital streaming platforms. To preorder the album, fans can go through www.linktr.ee/deadbrokeband/.
