An artistic trip in Toronto

Take in an immersive art show inspired by the psychedelic renaissance.

An experience like no other is on display through October.

Psychedelics: The Experiential Exhibition has been taking guests on a journey blending art, music, and technology since Sept. 30.

The three floored exhibition showcases the work of 25 artists from around the world, including local artists from Toronto and various other psychedelic experiences.

James Drayton, executive producer and creative director of the show, says the curation is an intersection of art, technology, and experience.

“I’ve been looking for concepts worthy of creating a show around. And I did not want that to be just Instagrammable eye candy. I wanted there to be some meaning to it, some substance, cultural relevance,” he said.

The exhibit has rooms on the first floor where one can get the psychedelic feel. This includes a 23-foot sculpture that takes viewers on a nine-minute visual journey through the Ayahuasca ceremony.

The Ayahuasca ceremony is of South American origin and has a shaman lead a group of people through a trip caused by the tea/drink used for spiritual and religious purposes. The sculpture allows viewers to experience a condensed form of the ceremony with vibrant visuals and sounds.

Drayton said with the world of psychedelics slowly turning legal, safe, and responsible, his idea is to build awareness through art.

Psychedelic therapy has been allowed by Health Canada since 2022 and has become increasingly popular in mental-health care. The experiential exhibition does not promote the use of psychedelics but aims to educate people on the benefits and risks of using psychedelic drugs and entertain them.

“There’s a lot of information and history with really vibrant art,” said Seth Sikma, an artist attending the exhibit.

Sikma added that the exhibit allows artists like himself to open their minds and see outside the box.

“I don’t practice much drug use, but this show is for everyone, even those not into arts. It’s a great experience.”

Drayton has worked on the team for the Van Gogh Exhibit: The Immersive Experience at the Lighthouse ArtSpace prior to this but this is his first time as the key producer and creative director for a show of this scale.

“I conceptualized it all myself. But then I went out and pulled in artists to contribute. I pulled in journalists and authors to write all this text and contribute to the show,” Drayton said.

The experiential art exhibition opened in Toronto on Sept. 30 with a special opening premiere the evening before. More information and tickets are available on their website: www.psychedelicsshow.com
