A return to in-person learning means SA events are back in full swing.
Student Association (SA) run events are back and this year, they will be better than ever.
Boat cruises, movie screenings and other new events are on the horizon for students to participate in-person this fall.
Neil Cumberbatch, senior coordinator of Events and Recreation, has been part of the SA since 2004. He and his team of nine staff aim to put on engaging events for students, especially after COVID-19.
“One of my favourite parts of the job is being able to engage with students. I just confirmed all the events for this semester today and once we finalized how we’re going to structure each event, we can move into the hallways to engage, promote, and talk to students,” said Cumberbatch.
When planning for what events to cater for students, the team thinks about what students would like to do on campus and around the city. They then try organizing those events and offer students who wish to be involved, a lower fare.
An upcoming event includes a private screening of the Marvel movie Black Panther before it is open to the public.
It will be held at the Younge and Eglinton theatre where more than 300 seats are available for GBC students to attend, plus a limited number of guests. Tickets will be sold at $5.
Cumberbatch also mentioned that this year’s events are something that the new cohort have not yet seen and experienced.
“We have our on-campus escape room happening on Oct. 13 at Casa Loma campus.” said Cumberbatch. “That’s something that we’ve never done before.”
In the past, two boat cruises have been held every year, one at the beginning of the school year and one at the end of the school year. Tickets for the cruises are often sold out in days or weeks, says Cumberbatch. This year, tickets for the first boat cruise after the pandemic were sold out within two weeks.
There will be events organized for GBC students throughout the whole academic year by the SA team.
Cumberbatch says his team is just one element of SA where other departments, like Clubs and Networks and the Community Care Centre also do a lot of programming for GBC students.
