With the promise of more in-person activities at GBC for the incoming Spring and Fall semesters, students will be happy to know that they will soon be able to get more out of recreation and activity services offered on campus.
Currently, recreation services are limited to the Casa Loma campus, since the St. James Athletic Centre is under repair due to last summer’s electrical fire. The centre plans to reopen sometime at the beginning of the Fall semester.
Although activities are limited to one campus at the moment, Campus Recreation & Wellness Coordinator Wendy Roberts-Simpson noted that there are still several activities available to students: “Currently we have an open gym. It’s great because we have scheduled activities on a regular basis. This means basketball, pick up ball, soccer, and badminton are all running.”
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, fitness classes have been delivered virtually via Instagram. “Although classes have been primarily online, there is a plan to shift to in-person [classes] by Fall. We also have a goal of continuing the online live fitness classes for those who are continuing their learning remotely,” Roberts-Simpson said.
For new or existing students with any apprehension about in-person participation, Roberts-Simpson suggests just dropping in and looking around. “It’s a very welcoming environment. If you want to get involved or learn a new sport, there’s always someone around to help and teach you. Come on in and ask!” she said. Wendy Roberts-Simpson is also available on campus to help students feel more comfortable taking part in recreation services offered through GBC.
For more information about on-site activities, Instagram live fitness classes and more, visit the George Brown Huskies Website. The fitness centre will be open Tuesday to Friday from 10:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. and the gymnasium from Tuesday to Friday from 10:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
Space is limited and recreation activities operate on a first come first serve basis.
