SAGBC extends nomination period, citing lack of nominations

The Student Association of George Brown College (SAGBC) announced today that it has extended the nomination period for three of its positions, including the organization’s two most highest-profile positions, until later this week. In a letter signed by the chief returning office Charles Wilson, the SAGBC said the number of nominations “is less than the total number of offices available.”

The original deadline for the SAGBC’s nomination period was on Tuesday, November 16. The revised deadline, which applies only to the positions of director of communications and internal, director of operations and the preparatory and liberal studies centre representative, is 1:00 p.m. ET on Friday, November 19.

The Dialog is funded by the SAGBC.

The two director positions are internally considered the two highest-profile student-elected positions at the SAGBC. At the SAGBC’s recent Annual General Meeting, the student body approved a SAGBC motion to limit candidates for these positions to those who are enrolled in no more than a 50 per cent course load. The motion also raised the positions’ weekly schedule to 28 hours per week.

That change could have affected international students’ ability to nominate for these positions, as study permits restrict students to 20 hours per week.

Over the past two years, the board composition has been 90 per cent international students, according to an email from general manager Rosalyn Miller received by the Dialog following the AGM. The SAGBC had also recently made a point to address a lack of diversity among its board members.

An announcement about candidates for the SAGBC election is expected on Friday, following the close of the new nomination deadline.
