Classes to resume on Tuesday, but other issues remain unresolved after suspected Malware infection

At 5 p.m., George Brown College (GBC) announced that all classes will resume on June 15, after a college-wide IT system shutdown that occurred on the evening of June 13 due to a suspected malware infection. While GBC says there has been no indication of a data breach at this time, specialists continue to investigate the problem as GBC apologizes for the inconvenience.

On the evening of June 13, GBC published a news release that all in-person and online classes and services would be cancelled for the day of June 14 in order to contain a suspected Malware infection that led to a system-wide IT shutdown. This news left students concerned about important course deadlines, class attendance, and tests and unsure of what to expect for the days going forward. While connection to Blackboard has been restored, other college IT systems still remain out of service.

The release also says that the log-in process for Blackboard has changed since the system reboot, with students now being advised to enter only their student ID number without @georgebrown.ca at the end, while passwords remain the same. Moreover, faculty have been advised to log into Blackboard as soon as possible to update their classes with any specific instructions, and it is recommended that students continuously check Blackboard for updates regarding important course information.

Outlook still remains unavailable so students will not be able to communicate with their instructors through email, but Blackboard and MS Teams remain available. The employee Town Hall will also be rescheduled to a different date.

Please visit GBC’s Facebook and Twitter for current status updates.
