Three elected to SAGBC board of directors in Fall 2020 election

Taranjeet Singh Manchanda, Sagar Sharma, and Victoria Villanueva have been elected to the Student Association of George Brown College board of directors in the roles of Director of Communications and Internal, Director of Operations, and Community Services and Early Childhood Educational Centre Representative respectively.

Voting was open between November 23 and November 27, 2020. Out of a college population of over 20,000, fewer than 900 votes were cast.

With 566 out of 869, Taranjeet Singh Manchanda won the race for Director of Communications and Internal. His only competitor, Vishali Sitharthan, dropped out of the race just after voting opened, but still received 223 votes.

As the Director of Communications and Internal, Manchanda will be using his background as the Director of Education and Equity. He says his first course of action will be to ensure transparency and accountability and strive for equity and inclusion on campus.

“I’ll be always there, helping students and making sure the students’ concerns and needs are being addressed at the highest level at George Brown,” said Manchanda.

Sagar Sharma won 679 out of 869 votes in the race for the Director of Operations role. He says his first action will be to gain a deeper understanding of the Student Association and its finances.

“I definitely want to make a promise that whatever the responsibility I’ll be given, I will fulfill that. And I want all of you to know that I am going to work for students. I am going to work for all of them,” said Sharma.

In the only contested race, Victoria Villanueva beat Stefan Enrique Joseph Kallikaden by a margin of 26 votes for the role of Community Services and Early Childhood Educational Centre Representative.

Only 100 students voted in the Community Services and Early Childhood Educational Centre Representative position.

Villanueva says she would like to start her position by raising awareness about who she is and what she stands for, and begin having discussions with the people she will be working with.

“I believe the students have such great suggestions, ideas, feedback, and grievances, and I think that it would be amazing if there was a safe space for students to hold their voice. Where they can share their voice and opinions and ideas,” says Villanueva.

The newly-elected candidates will begin their term in the Winter 2021 semester.
