The stands at Newnham Arena may have been packed with Seneca fans on January 17th. But all in attendance would leave defeated, as George Brown would take home the Seneca Tournament.
At Seneca, they were one of several teams to play the Seneca Extramural tournament, playing three rounds. The Huskies played a two-game final against the University of Toronto Scarborough, where they would take the series in the second game.
The Huskies beat Humber in the first round, with forward Brockie Lucas netting 2, before hosting Seneca Sting in a 5-1 win. “We got off to a good start,” Lucas said of the Humber game, “it got a little bit dull in the second period, but we held on defensively.”
George Brown saw a wide range of scoring, as Brockie would another goal and an assist in the Seneca game, with Cole Wette, Colin Ferreira, Sam McEachran, and Ethan Aristodemo all adding to the tally, with the former three also getting assists. Goaltenders Matthew Morley and the unbeaten Dylan Cox would share duties, the tandem having only allowed one goal up to this tournament.
The team saw their run hit a slight halt, losing the first game of the final 4-3 with nine seconds to go. The second game would end 1-1, with Marc Samonas scoring the lone goal, but the Huskies would take it home after a three round shootout, as Lucas netted the winner.
George Brown had won their previous OCAA tournament at Humber North last November, with the Huskies beating Canadore in the final 4-3. Tournaments at Laurier Brantford and Georgian Barrie follow, with the Huskies hoping to follow up the last two tournament wins.
