“Being a leader means being vocal.” says Victoria Lawrence. The second year hybrid guard/forward has averaged 15.6 points per game, helping the Huskies women’s basketball team to second place to finish the first half.
With this season being her first at George Brown, Lawrence has been quick to become a part of the team. “There’s a lot of supportive staff,” she said following a practice, “it’s more like a family.”
The Huskies finished their first half with a blow. Ending a four-game winning streak with a narrow 67-61 loss to Algonquin, where Lawrence scored 10 points. Despite any drawbacks, the entire team has been sure to rally together, under the mentorship of captain Zae Sellers.
“Zae pushes us,” Lawerance claims, echoing the impact of the fifth year star that Sellers helps them “compete anytime.” But the help doesn’t end with the captain. “[Hakh] and [Granger], they’re straight out of high school, but they’re playing well. They’re stepping out from their shells now.”
The Huskies are behind Algonquin, currently unbeaten, in the East Division. They return at Casa Loma on January 10, against Centennial.
Lawrence is optimistic they can make a run for first. As a role model for the younger players, any bumps along the way are fine. “I have to make mistakes, but smart mistakes,” she says.
