After reading an article in the Globe and Mail, I must say that I agree – the stigma surrounding mental illness may in fact be the exact reason why people do not seek treatment.
As you all may know just from these blog posts, that I am indeed a mental health advocate and I try hard to create healthier environments for people, especially students, by spreading the word about mental health and by educating others on the effects of stigma.
According to this article written by Gayle Macdonald and published on Mar.3, mental health sufferers are reluctant to seek treatment or even disclose their illness – which is referred to in the article as a toxic effect of stigma.
People who suffer from mental health issues, whether it be from bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety or any other issue, should seek treatment regardless of stigma. Stigma, in my opinion is associated with people who are uneducated on the topic of mental health, and who do not understand that these issues are common in today’s society.
Instead of worsening existing stigma, we should all try to reduce it by spreading awareness and taking part in existing campaigns.
Don’t discourage those with mental illness from receiving treatment, allow them to feel comfortable disclosing their issues and allow them to receive the help they rightfully deserve.
