TTC approves new streetcar route on King Street

By the fall, TTC plans to make new 514 route line fully accessible

Starting in June, students going to the St. James campus might notice improved streetcar service on King Street.

The Toronto Transit System (TTC) plans to introduce of the 514 Cherry route that will increase streetcar service on King Street, overlaying with the existing 504 route.

According to a TTC staff report, the route will operate between the “Distillery Loop and Dufferin Gates Loop via Cherry Street, King Street, and Dufferin Street.” By the fall, according to Tweets from spokesperson Brad Ross, the new route will be fully serviced with the Bombardier-made accessible streetcars in the central section of King Street. When the new route starts however, it will have a mix of legacy and new streetcars.

The new route is scheduled to start June 19, 2016, and according to the staff report will have no effect on the commission’s operating costs. The line will also “support the TTC’s and City’s objectives of facilitating more-spontaneous travel for people who need accessible services,” according to the report.

The TTC has already made progress in moving towards providing barrier-free, accessible transit services for all customers, according to the report, having already implemented accessible low-floor streetcars to the 510 Spadina and 509 Harbourfront routes.
